Kittens normally knead to stimulate their mothers milk glands while they feed. If you see kittens feed, they knead while doing it. The fact that your cat does that to you means "you are mommy and she is showing you affection" Most cats will knead, if they aren't stuck up LOL or ignoring you at the time

Hi there...when cats knead (making biscuits) it goes back to when kittens would nurse for milk. Kneading the mother's teets with its tiny paws would stimulate the milk flow. This "milk-kneading" (as it is called) is done a slow pace of about 1 stroke every 2 seconds while the kitten would purr loudly. What appears to happen when we sit downs that we look relaxed to our cat, signaling to it to hop up and start the milk-kneading activity. Our cat reverts to kittenhood and happily starts kneading and it becomes more of a comfort behaviour.

They start kneading from the time they are babies when they are still nursing from their mothers.
WIth almost all cats it continues into adulthood.
It seems to be a source of comfort to them.

Kneading is what they did to help stimulate their mom and recieve milk. When they do it after they are weaned it is thought to be a pleasurable behavior because formerlly they recieved milk for it.

Like purring it is a comfort to them. It is like thumb-sucking in small children. I think it is also a way of letting you know that they feel as comfortable with you as they would their mother, so it is a great compliment.

I have always just assumed that they are "preparing their bed." Mine only does it when he is getting ready to sleep.
