All I can come up with is congratulations on your retirement...but we would like to say something a little more witty or profound. Any ideas.

It's very nice that you are putting so much thought into this; I am sure he will appreciate it! These kinds of cards and messages are best when they are as personal and specific as possible. For example, if you know something about what he likes to do in his leisure time, mention that you hope he will enjoy having more time to do that, as well as to discover new pursuits. If you can mention very specific contributions he made to the company, put that in the message as well. Doesn't have to be long-winded; just something like "We will continue to reap the benefits of your (whatever he did) after you are gone."

Good luck!

How about writing all the exciting things that can be done now, like travel, taking up that hobby or course, gardening...whatever.
Build up the excitement of finally leaving work...
