What was he trying to do? He was going crazy rolling and contorting in whatever the scent was. Was he leaving or trying to pick up a scent?

All dogs do this. My dog does this sometimes too. I try to stop him when he does it because I know it has to be gross. I don't investigate further than that because I don't want to know what he was really rolling in. They pick up a scent sometimes and for some odd reason they have to roll around it. The look so happy when they do it too! It cracks me up. Can you imagine if people did that? Hahaha!

I have 2 dogs as well, what happens is when they get a scent that they like, like us with food I guess, when we smell food we get excited because most the time we know we're about to eat, the same with them, they will smell this, get excited and start showing there emotions by rolling around.

its a funny thing but I believe that dogs believe the more you stink the more power you have haha. he was picking up a scent. prob rolling in what used to be poop there or even a dead animal...nasty I know...but...its the nature of the dog :) usually dogs pee to mark their scent and territory. Hope that helps some...I've ben studying dogs for a A LONG time :)

Most dogs will do this. It is their pack instinct. Out in the wild, a dog will roll in the urine of another animal...such as a deer...and then take that scent back to the other dogs in the pack to let them know what they found. This could aid in finding good hunting.

So your dog was gathering a scent on himself to let you know what he found.

What a dog thinks smells good isn't always good. My dog likes to get in the field next door and roll in the cow patties.

Ah yes, the invisible stinky thing. We have some of those here. Dogs love to roll in those things - I'm very glad that I can't see what those things are (ewww) - smelling them is bad enough!

LOL My dogs love to roll in anything stinky! The poodle prefers dead worms...and the schnauzer likes anything that smells like fishy! Trust me, it wasn't something invisible that smelled good!
