The Adobe Reader will only allow you to read a file, keep a copy, print, but you cannot edit unless you have a PDF converter which can convert it to an editable file like Word.

I use it when downloading information off the net and it arrives in PDF format.

When would I convert to PDF? I needed to send a file to someone who did not have Word or know her way around the computer too well. Adobe Reader was on her PC so I inserted the file into my Print Shop and saved it as PDF. She was able to at least open the file and read it.

I can think of 2 reasons.

1) To protect the file. Once in .PDF format the file is not easily (although not impossible) to edit. For example if you had a M.S. Word document you wanted to share with someone but didn't want them to edit it you could .PDF it first.

2) Size reduction. If you have a large file it will almost always reduce in size greatly by being made a .PDF. For instance the M.S. Word file I mentioned above. Let's say it was a 12 meg file due to some embedded pictures. Making it a .PDF would reduce the file size to something in the 2-3 megabyte range.

Hope that helps.

For legal purposes, it is often imperative that some documents published are unchangeable. This is one of the two reason that the PDF standard is so ingrained in todays computing society. This is also why you frequently cannot export a PDF to a different format.

Another good reason is because of how large a standard PDF is. Any time you have a technical document you can just publish it in PDF.

Lastly, if you want a document that is NOT going to change formatting, you would want to publish it in PDF. You could then take it to any copy facility and have it printed. (good idea for large documents, saves wear and tear on your hardware.

Adobe Reader just reads pdf files.
But pdf are good for print production, forms you want people to read but not alter (easily), manuals on CDs, etc.

you pick to do no longer some thing yet keep the report with .pdf extension thats all. like say you pick to rework a international report call into PDF report. what you pick to do is first open the report and decide report-saveAs. then you truly only change the report extension as .pdf. thats all
