Wow, you did not look in the right places..California is a Mecca for such things...Their are farmers markets and regular markets all over the place. If you were on a bus line maybe it just did not go past ones close by...One is The Farmers Market at The Grove at W. 3rd and Fairfax. Take Santa Monica Blvd in ( East)toward West Hollywood, take a right on W. 3rd and it is several blocks east..Everyone knows where it is so just ask someone..Gee, if fresh food is your only concern you are set, Have a blast......

That's kinda weird you didn't find any fresh places because Santa Monica and Los Angeles are known for fresh places. You should go to the Farmers Market or Whole foods which has some of the freshest food in the country. Whole foods is on Whilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica and Farmers Market diferentiates between locations on Arizona and 2nd and Arizona and 3rd and on Main street and Ocean Park. The only bad thing though is that it's only open on the weekends. Just don't go to any grocery stores like Ralphs or Vons and you won't see any frozen food.

Most supermarkets in LA (Ralphs, Albertson's, Von's, Stater Brothers) have fresh produce. In fact, supermarkets in SoCal tend to have a lot more produce than other parts of the country (at least that has been my experience). Other stores like Trader Joe's also have produce. If you were in downtown LA, why didn't you go to Grand Central Market? There's tons of fresh fruit, meat, fish, and veggies. In fact, it doesn't get much fresher than that. If you are going to Santa Monica, I know the Third Street Promenade has a Farmer's Market at least once per week. Until then, just go to Von's or Pavilion's.

Have fun!
