Basically I am looking for areas to retire in where I can buy land and build a nice home without being subject to exorbitant property taxes on my land and home every year for the rest of my life.

States with income taxes generally have significantly lower property tax rates. My property tax rate in MO is less than 1/5 of what it was for property I owned in TX.

That can be skewed somewhat in states where property values are comparitively high (most of CA, parts of NY & MA immediately come to mind) where a low rate still results in a large bill.

I'm in SW MO and property taxes and land prices are very reasonable. Plenty of lakes, woodlands, fishing, hunting and just about the lowest cost of living in the country. The only thing I pine for the the ocean.
