Parboil them first, then shake to make the edges crumbly, season and roast, you could spray them with some olive oil, which is actually better than butter.
Otherwise I would just add a little butter and baste them later on. You have to be careful the butter doesnt burn as roast potatoes are done in a hot oven.

As previously stated, olive oil is a much healthier substitute for butter. However if butter is what is in your house I would melt about 1 tbsp per potato and in a bowl toss with the potatoes. Add salt, pepper and a little paprika (or cayenne if you like it spicy). Bake at 350 (rather than a higher temperature usually used for roasting potatoes) as the butter will burn.

If you leave the peels on you can just bake them without any added oil. If you're talking about peeling them first, the taste and texture would improve from a coating of some sort of oil. You need a little oil/lipids in your diet for health. An extra-light olive oil serves well without overpowering anything with an olive taste, and is healthier than butter.

Apparently, you can!
Dry Roast Potatoes & Parsnips
Tasty yet low fat!
1. Choose medium potatoes of an even size. Peel the potatoes and parsnips and par-boil in two separate saucepans in vegetable stock.
2. Drain and place on a non-stick baking tray. Sprinkle lightly with salt and bake in a preheated oven at Gas 6/200C/400F for 1 hour.

You can but butter tends to burn. You are better off using olive oil or oil of some kind. Peanut oil has the highest smoke point, but is pretty expensive.
One thing you can do is add butter to olive oil and that will raise the smoke point (the point when a oil or fat breaks down and smokes and begins to burn)
Veggie oil is alot less fat than butter.

I do this all the time. Cut your potatoes into wedges and dunk them in whatever oil you have (melted butter will work) and season them with salt and pepper and whatever kind of herbs you like - I like Italian seasoning and roast in the oven until light brown and crispy.

Of course, you could. But I would suggest boiling them first for a few minutes. If not you may end up with roasted but dehydrated potatoes
