I'm getting married in July, and I'm in debt and was wondering how much money do people give as a wedding gift? And also if your married how much money did you get from your wedding?

my debt is not because of the wedding it is because of a doctor bill. I had to have my gallbladder removed and my insurance didn't cover it all. And you know if you don't pay them off within a certain time frame they turn you over to collections.

A lot of it depends on the type of people your inviting. A few years ago my friend got married and she got 3,000 for a 300 person wedding. Another friend of mine got married last summer and she had 200 people she recv'd 5,000. It's a shame but a lot of people really don't give anything.

In the NorthEast we usually try to cover the amount of the plates in our party. Its not uncommon to see checkbooks on the tables making out gifts after seeing the spread. The thought is to try and recoup what they spent on the reception. Of course that never really happens, but we made back a good part of what we spent that day.

But I think we are really the only area of the country that does this, in other parts money is never given just gifts.(People not fromour area kind of think this is a "cold" practice) I wouldnt expect anything if I were you, and if you do wind up getting money its a nice bonus.

ETA: You should check about collections. I think with medical issues they cant turn you over to collections by law since its a necessary medical procedure (not elective like plastic surgery). I am pretty sure I am right about this, but check into it. If you get sent to collections, I would protest.

Wow - I've never heard of "expecting" money as wedding gifts.
Why do people think they need to go overboard (and end up in debt)? What a bad way to start a lifetime together!
The only time I've given money was when I knew the couple was truly struggling. And then it was at a small "home" wedding (20 people) and the bride had had a medical emergency shortly before. Otherwise I give off the bridal registries.
I would expect nothing and be happy with what ever I got.

I think a lot of this might depend on the part of the country you live in. In NY/NJ people almost exclusively give cash. Like Kateq said, enough to at least cover your plate. It also might depend on family tradition. In my family, you get what you give. Aunts and Uncles always give a set amount, as do cousins. I also have family who lives in the south and cash isn't always the thing down there. Sometimes they bring an actual gift to the ceremony.

Well I'm italian, so we always give a minimum of $150/person. My bro got married last summer and made $32 000.

There is no "average." Every couple is different. :)
