It depends. If you had abscesses, your doctor should have put you on a round of antibiotics. Typically you would finish those before you actually got the tooth out. The antibiotic stays in your system for about 7 days after you finish the medication. This eliminates the abscess (which is an infection). Usually some swelling and soreness is completely normal, especially if it was a back tooth. I would give it a few more days and if you are still having problems, or if it gets significantly worse, I would call your dentist. Also, you cannot get an abscess in the same area if the tooth has been removed. That eliminates the possibility of an abscess. Hope you feel better soon! Swish with warm salt water!

I had abcess and my husband (dentist) had to extract that tooth. I got a little bit of swelling after that but it went down in a few days. In your case it is highly likely that it is just an after effect. I didn't even have to take any antibiotics to get rid of the abcess. It went away after the extraction. You should wait a few days and if it still persists, I would suggest you to go back and see ur dentist again.

This is not something you want to play with. Get to the doctor and get antibiotics now! A lot of people don't know that untreated abcesses in the mouth can kill you! You can get a systemic infection that will damage your heart! Go to your doctor!

The swelling and pain are normal. Pulling a tooth is essentially creating a wound. Pain and swelling are the body's natural reactions to this. If the condition persists beyond a week or two, then you need to go back.

Just the after effect. I've had two teeth pulled and it felt just like that and it felt just like that when I had the implants put in to replace them. Tooth extraction--especially if you've had abscess (maybe it was a little infected when it was pulled?) is very traumatic for your gums.
