I'm not crazy about endless pitying, but after a genuine loss or disaster, its not their ego, its their disrupted life and not recognizing that is simply you enjoying the fact that you think you would handle it differently, as in fact everyone does. Would it surprise you to know that egos need feeding? Especially if you feel as though all of the good things in life have left, and you know, even looking though the eyes of someone else, that may be an honest evaluation of whats happened. The loss of a spouse of 55 years, knowing there won't be another man to love you or take out the garbage. The disaster that wipes out your home and all your possessions and leaves you with nothing but endless government paperwork, these things can't be changed by someone elses notion that enought pity is enough. I do favor practical aid over pity, but self pity may only be a realistic, if unhappy truth. Not all problems can be overcome, like a reoccurence of cancer with a negative prognosis at 12, and getting ahead when your 75, can be problematic.
Life isn't always fixable.

I have an illness that means pain is an integral part of my life and in all honesty I'm indifferent as to what people think of that. I actually turn it on its head and use the pain as a powerful means of self-motivation. I don't recommend suffering as a lifestyle choice but I've learnt more from overcoming it and refusing to let it control my life than from anything else I've ever experienced.

I agree with that whole heatedly. Just feeling sorry for someone doesn't help them at all. I think if someone is hurting we, as humans, have a responsibility to try and make things better. Just sympathizing doesn't do anything but justify the problem.
Of course there are people out there that don't want help, all they want is someone to commiserate with them. That drives me crazy because they are then just looking to bring others into their world of pain. Frustrating.

Generally I think your are correct, however there are circumstances where people are totally unable to help themselves,in certain areas of the world where dire poverty and prolonged drought happen it is not feasible for people to do much to live,I think your statement should apply mostly to the `ME` people, who are always whingeing about themselves, not being able to cope with simple problems of life.

Everything a person experiences is the direct result of their choices and actions.
Negative experiences and pain are how we learn.
Change what you do you will change the results you get.
No need for pitty!
