God is Truth! Unfortunately that's what Pilate doesn't know, but he identifies that Jesus is the witness to the Truth.

Truth is whatever it is, to you. As long as you keep in mind it isn't necessarily MY truth, or the next man's truth. And don't confuse "truth" with "fact." Facts are most often solid, tangible, and can be verified scientifically or have research and proof to back them up. Truth is entirely subjective, facts are almost always the same for everyone (given a common point of view).

Absolute truth pertains to established laws in heaven. Relative truth is demonstrating those eternal truths on the temporal plane.
Pilate only saw life in the corporeal world and could not relate to the eternal truth which was standing in front of him under his authority to 'judge' the author of life (and his own).

So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

The point, in context, was that Truth incarnate was standing in front of him.

Matthew 16:13-18
13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
