Physically, the body shuts down it's central nervous and circulatory systems. You no longer breathe or have a heartbeat. As time goes by, organisms known as decomposers will break down your flesh and organs. Bones however last longer and can even be preserved for many years if (if correctly fossilized). If embalbing measures are taking, the whole body can be preserved for thousands of years (look at the ancient egyptian methods). If you are frozen in ice, this will also preserve your body in whole. Presuming that you are burried in the earth, your nutrients will aid the earth and help it to become more fertile. Spiritually or mentally: knowone knows. Some believe that you will go to heaven or hell depending on your deeds. Others believe that you simply go back into unconsciousness, similar to before you were born. But until someone has returned from death, know one will ever know. Whatever the case, death is actually, perhaps ironically part of the life cycle. Every organism that is born will eventually die. It is an inevitability. And until death can be prevented (right now it can only be delayed by becoming cryogenically frozen) every living thing is subject to death. Both birth and death is beyond our will. But don't forget, death is necessary. Without death, the world would become overpopulated. Also, every great story is one that has a beginning, middle, and end. Death is the number 2 most common fear in people. Public speaking is number 1! I hope you have received some resolve in this answer.

We gradually return to the soil from which we came and the cycle of life begins again.
I once heard a funny comment I rather like though ' I'm going to live forever or die trying!'

I'm burned to ashes and thrown into the sea at my favourite beach - end of.
The energy that makes me up goes on to create something else - that's all folks.

Same as what happens to a match stick after it burns. You can become something useful by donating your organs.

Death is caused by hypoxemia of the brain (lack of oxygen). When the brain does not get oxygen, the nervous processes that are called "life" cannot sustain themselves, and the condition of death ensues.
