Great question, you'd be a good candidate for the "Buddy Christ" program.
Personally I don't think we are supposed to have ANY pictures of Christ around, especially when we don't know what He looked like.

The grim portraits are probably there to remind us of the Lord's sacrifice, His death on the cross and how He paid our sin debt and well-deserved punishment.

Christians are not sad all the time. Jesus was not killed on the Cross... He became a sacrifice for all. That time He spent on the cross was the greatest moment in the history of man, in the eyes of all Christians, for in that one act we were all given the means to reach eternal life.

The Bible says the wages of sin is death. Jesus took our place in paying the price for our deeds. Then He rose again on the Third Day according to the OT prophecies and His prophecy to the pharisees about the Temple (tear it down and I will build it again in three days).

Through His resurrection, Jesus being the first, we will all in like manner be resurrected after death.

Jesus' dancing did not save anyone from eternal damnation, yet His time on the cross did.

If He did not die and He saved humanity in this one act, why would we be sad?

Never seen a painting......smiling? I have. The cross pictures are painted most because it was the most important event in human history....and he wouldn't be "smiling' at the time. That explains alot of why you don't see alot of pics of Jesus smiling. I have seen some really ancient paintings of Jesus smiling, but they were of Him sitting on his throne not of the crusifixion.

Because the death of Jesus is what brought about joy for Christians. His unselfish sacrifice allows us to be free of condemnation.

I don't know, but it called to mind one of my favorite movie quotes (from "The Next Karate Kid"):

Julie Pierce: What's going on?
Kesuke Miyagi: Nothing. Just monks having good time.
Julie Pierce: I thought they were supposed to be spiritual
Kesuke Miyagi: Never trust spiritual leader who doesn't dance.

Good question. Jesus did not come to Earth to dance, even though he may have, so why highlight that.

Dancing with the Stars, Rapture Edition.
