takes time for the drug to get into your system, and to kill off a big enough chunk of bacteria to reduce your symptoms. and some start killing right away, others like sulfas and tetracyclines attack replication or protein synthesis so its takes awhile to weaken the population. most antibiotics orgininated from molds and fungus, those organisms secrete chemicals naturally to kill off bacteria that compete from food. humans figured out how to synthesize and tweak those chemicals so theyre more powerful and have more favorable properties, thus you have modern antibiotics
