Faith is not rational, and if you have been blessed by God, why would you want you withhold that from someone else, especially your children?

My, my, my!! What a day for issues!! (Just like any other day, I suppose. Sigh) Anyway...to your statement/question...
I kept my son out of the Church until he was eleven years old, which is when he was starting to ask very rational questions about God, death, etc. We had lost several very close relatives over the previous few years and he was having a hard time dealing with it. I asked him if he wanted to learn more about God, which HE decided to do. I found a church that was mild (no hellfire and brimstone...the last thing he needed was to be threatened with punishment and death...ugh), made sense (it actually answered all the questions that were left unanswered by the traditional Christian church I attended in my youth), was full of wonderful people (there are no hypocrites here...part of the foundation of the Church is to be held accountable for all your actions, whether you ask forgiveness or not...ever heard of Karma?), and he was not made fun of (he's emotionally disabled and doesn't typically "fit in" with other kids). If, at any time, he has questions, we find the answers. We have yet to have any we couldn't answer and understand. If he ever decides this is not the path for him, I will allow him to think for himself and choose his own path.
Everyone has their own free agency the Lord gave them to use and make their own decisions. If that is supressed or counteracted in any way, it is going against God's will. I will have no part in that. Period. When someone hears His word, they either find it rings true or rubs them the wrong way. Not everyone is going to believe. That's why we are referred to as His CHOSEN ones. We are the minority at this point. That will change in the fullness of time. In the meantime, I will do what I can to SHARE the love of Christ, but I will never shove it down your throat. We are to guide and teach, not be heavy-handed. I'm sorry for your negative experiences with the love of God.
Blessings...
A Latter Day Saint

Good luck getting a rational answer from a religious person. "It's not brainwashing, it's showing them the way." "We don't say to suppress logic, we tell them to use it, it's a gift from God."
It's always the same thing. They don't even see the irony in what they're saying. They try to use logic to defend an illogical position. It's pathetic, and wrong.
As far as parents telling their children whatever, it's continuing the tradition, and in general, people with "faith" want as many others with that same "faith" to be around them as much as possible, because people that do not share their views are a threat to their own "faith," hence they may accidentally start thinking.

The same goes for mathematics and science. That is why people don't care about advancing themselves. The feel that if their parents didn't need to know something, they don't need to know it. Most of us are too lazy to grow.

Sounds like a question you should ask your parents. They only tell you what they know. They were taught to never question and they had the fear of hell over them. Don't judge them too harshly.

Child is closer to God than most adults. Innocence is virtue, which most of adults destroy. Innocence and faith bring one closer to God.
