There is one serving Field Marshal who is stationed in Scotland in the Army's HQ, but during times of war there will be another appointed. One is to oversee the deployment of the home guard, and the other to oversee the deployment of operational troops. Their is only ever two Field marshals, one only in peace time. The Field Marshals the other guys are on about are probably retired. If you gain a rank of major or above you hold that rank in retirement.

No Field Marshals are appointed unless the country is in either total war or a war where several British armies are required. They then keep that rank until they retire. There are some still alive.

Field Marshal is a war rank, much like the U.S. Army's General of the Army. Currently there is no active Field marshal, nor a General of the Army in the U.S. Army

Do not think the Brit Army have any field marshals. I'm sure the rank 'field marshall' is only used in time of war. Could be wrong about that.

Appointment is for life. there are currently 6 living Field Marshals of the British Army, but none are really young enough to still be actively engaged in Army business - the youngest (HRH the Duke of Kent) is now 71. Baron Inge, one month his senior, retired in 1997.
