If by "for free" you mean, you don't have a valid copy of Windows XP Home Edition, then the MS website will obligate you to "Validate" your copy of Windows, before installing it for you, (but AFTER you have taken the time to download it, go figure)... if your windows is not Valid, then it installs a nasty little message for you, that won't allow anymore updates, and slows down your start page with a "This version of Windows is not valid" message, and another "You may be the victim of Piracy" message at startup too... if your copy of Windows is valid (I mean, hell, if you're gonna pirate windows xp, why bother with the home edition!? go PRO!), then of course, none of this pertains to you, does it? In that case, all Microsoft updates are and always have been FREE! You may be able to find a copy of SP2 out there in the P2P world (Grokster, Sharebear, Limewire, filedonkey, etc.) but my legal disclaimer would go something like this: the files you get on those sites are often questionable, & full of virii (isn't that the plural of virus?). I wouldn't share a MS file, (they do go after folks) and I wouldn't trust the file from someone else, unless it's been tested on a machine. If you can legally download this from the MS website, set your updates to automatic ( I hope this helps! Start > Settings > Control Panel; click on Automatic Updates, and select Update Automatically, I believe it also allows you to choose a time (like daily at 3pm, etc.) for now, you can manually go to the new (and improved?) MS update page; http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx?returnurl=http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate&ln=en-us
I hope this helps!

Go to windows update.Just make sure that you are running a genuine Windows XP or else you can not download the SP2 update because microsoft might ask you first to validate your windows software before allowing you to download update.

Open your browser and go to tools, windows update. If you have changed hardware a couple of times, and reinstalled Windows a few times, Microsoft will accuse you of being a crook, as your computer will say "this copy of windows is not genuine" even if it is genuine. Just one more bug in Windows. Better is to install Kubuntu or other linux product, such as Suse, or put up with Microsoft's crap forever.
