A mental addiction can be determined the moment you question whether or not you are. Physical addiction is just that.. and it causes physical withdrawal when you stop taking the drug. Xanax is NOT a drug that you want to stop taking cold turkey, however. If you have taken it for any length of time, you absolutely MUST graduate yourself off rather than stop outright. If you don't, it can cause heart palpitations, anxiety, nausea, headache and a myriad of other physical withdrawal symptoms that need to be monitored by a doctor. Gradually stepping down can keep those symptoms at bay.
I suppose in answer to your immediate question, try a day without any at all... if your whole body system reacts, you are physically addicted.

You know when you have lost all control over the drug. When you say,"naw, I'm not going to take another pill. But that little inner voice is saying, "aww....go ahead, one more ai'nt gonna hurt ya." Do you know what that inner voice is??It sure is'nt your friend hon.Thats your addiction talking to you.And if you say "yeah, one more wont hurt, thats you losing control. And take it from me, you are well on your way to being addicted to xanax. And that is one mean drug to be addicted to.Withdrawling off of this drug can actually kill a person. So if your asking this question for youself, please,PLEASE,leave the pills alone. If you have any flush em down the toielet.Just get rid of them.If ya dont you will have a long and bumpy, and very lonely road. I"ll be praying for ya hon.

You know you're addicted when you begin taking the medication to deal with everyday stressors in life, or you just take it to feel "normal". Take a look at why it was prescribed in the first place, and ask yourself these questions. Am I still having the same problem? Am I taking this medication for THAT problem or am I taking it for other problems? Do I feel good when I do take it, and feel angry, depressed, too anxious when I don't? Do I feel physically sick when I don't take it? If you can answer those questions honestly and openly, you will know in your heart of hearts if you are addicted to them or not. The fact that you are even throwing this question out there makes me wonder. Maybe you already know the answer and aren't ready to face it. Trust me, the sooner you deal with this, the better off you'll be. As one of the unfortunates to become addicted to "legal" medication, I wish I would've been able to look at it long before I was MADE to. By then it was too late to quit on my own, and my life had fallen apart. If you are capable of becoming addicted to this medication, then you will be capable to become addicted to ANY mood altering substance, just so long as it takes you out of your own head. Please, please try to stop this medication before it's too late. The doctor can prescribe you different medication to help you deal with stuff.
Good luck and God Bless You.
