One dog is 7 years old and he taught the 1 1/2 year old the bad behavior. 7 yr old is a medium sized beagle mix. 1 1/2 year old is a a little smaller medium sized boxer mix. I've tried spraying with water and it didn't work.

Yes, it is nice for the dogs to bark to alert you someone is here. But, they continue on after the person or people enter for a while. It's very annoying because you can't even hold a conversation until they settle down.

If you are training these dogs to be watch dogs, then you've done your job lol. However, if you don't want them to bark at the door, then its a simple matter of training them. Have someone help you with this by knocking on the door or ringing the bell. When your dogs go to the door barking, give them a 'shh' sound in a stern tone and imitate a 'bite' from the pack leader (you) by touching them sternly on the shoulder. It's hard to explain here, but it should be a firm touch not a push. They have to see you as a pack leader and then they will obey you. Do this exercise several times. Depending on you and your dogs, spend from 15 min to an hour a day on this exercise.

Imagine you brought a newborn baby home from the hospital and it cried in the middle of the night. Would you yell at it? Slap it? Toss it outside in the rain? Or would you find out WHY it was crying and fix that? This little puppy is no different. Never never never yell at or hit a puppy. Ever. They don't understand what you want so all that abuse just terrifies them even more. To properly train a dog you must reward behavior you want and GENTLY correct behavior you don't want. If you raise your voice or your hand, you are doing it wrong. In this case, the barking...he cannot stop barking at night until you remove the reasons he's barking. A nine week old puppy needs to have food, water and a place to pee/poop at night. He also is used to being with his mother, his siblings and quite likely other people. Locking him alone in a strange room will make him lonely and afraid. Dogs are pack animals...they need to be around their family, especially when they are so young. Get a crate for him that you can put beside your bed. If he begins to cry in the night you can reassure him with a few words or a touch that he is not alone and he will (in a few nights) learn to trust that you will be there. Once he's feeling more comfortable and confident at night, you can move the crate away from the bed and eventually into another room if you want. A dog isn't a toy...they are intelligent and loving creatures who will devote themselves to you completely...they should never be treated badly. What you are doing now will result in a dog that is mistrustful, fearful and quite likely fear-aggressive when he's older. If your situation is such that you cannot treat this puppy the way he should be treated, because you are more concerned about your friend, your neighbors and your sleep, please, for his sake, take him back to the breeder and wait until you have a better situation.

I'm having the same problem with my 3 year old poodle. I noticed that when I'm home and someone comes to the door. If I pick him up and show him it's okay he will stop barking immediately. this has actually helped some. He was barking when the door would open anytime even when we come home until he saw us. Now he actually doesn't bark as much. Not sure if this will help with your dog but worth a try.

I can't help you with that because I happen to like it when my dogs bark when someone comes to the door. If it's a stranger then it gives them something to think about other than the reason they knocked on the door in the first place!

I really don't think you can stop this behavior, maybe just modify it. BUT, this is there job to protect there territory. I really am glad my dogs bark, even if it is a friend at the door. They are doing what they are supposed to do...PROTECT their owner ans there owners property.

I wouldn't want them not to bark when someone came to the door. It is their way of protecting you...I would praise that behavior!
