Canon PowerShot A540 - My husband bought me one of these for Christmas and I love it. It has digital and optical zoom, which is great if you want to enlarge photos and it has 6.0 mega pixels. It takes pictures at night(scenery), Night portraits, landscape pictures, portraits, super close ups, pictures underwater(with attachment) and has 3 minute camcorder. You can also buy addition lenses for it too. This little camera is great. Not hard to operate and is light. Takes excellent pictures. I haven't try video taping with it yet, but I have played around with the rest of the features. I highly recommend it. Also it's not as expensive as most of the other models with the same features.

Go to a camera store and you will be able to test out different brands and they will be able to make recommendations on what you want. Do not go to a 'Big Box' store to look at cameras.
I personally prefer Olympus. I have purchased 2 digital cameras they have both been Olympus. The second I only purchased because I wanted the 10x Optical Zoom (don't pay attention to the digital zoom, the optical is what you want).
