Even the cheapest DVD players have now Digital output, either coax or optical
Coax looks like a single RCA connector.
So, connect the digital out from the DVD player to the receiver
(they need to match: coax to coax or optical to optical)
Setup the DVD to output audio from the digital output
The AV receiver will automatically recognize it and decode it.

If your DVD player has no digital out, you can always connect RCA stereo out from the player to the Receiver, but you should really buy a new DVD player.
