Get inland as fast as possible. In general a tsunami will only affect areas within a mile of the ocean.

The easiest protection is a good early warning system to prevent loss of life. If the Indian Ocean had had an effective one thousands of people could have been saved from the boxing day tsunami. In terms of physical protection there are no totally effective ways but there are many that can lesson the impact. Common sense Don't build vital buildings near the coast. Make sure emergency services, hospitals, water plants and power stations are inland so they will keep running in the event of a tsunami. Pine forests In some areas 200m thicknesses of trees have been planted along the coast and any buildings behind. When the water runs throught the trees it gets slowed down considerably meaning it does less damage. The trees used should be flexible species like pines. They bend when the water hits but don't snap. If brittle species were used, snapped off branches and entire trees would just become weapons causing more damage. Raised coast road In areas of Japan they have built a road along the coast several metres above ground. It is on very solid foundations. Any tsunami will hit it, lessening the impact for anything behind it. It will also drain very quickly afterwards and provide a way for rescue teams to get quickly to where they are needed. Once again, with the Boxing day tsunami thousands died because they were cut off and the rescue teams couldn't reach them. Buildings on Stilits Buildings near to the coast can be built on concrete stilts. They need to be a few metres up and the stilts must be thick and strong. Water can rush through underneath without damaging the building. The stilts also slow down the water meaning it will do less damage and penetrate further
