chowder is more of a main meal than a soup, chowder has large and small chunks of fish and shellfish in it, chowder sounds much nicer than fish soup, if you had the choice in a reastraunt between chowder and fish soup, what would you choose, i would choose chowder

The word 'chowder' comes from the french word 'chaudree' which is a thick fish soup from the north of france. It has come to mean a white fish soup thickened with cream/potatoes to distinguish from the red fish soups of southern france which contain tomatoes..

So chowder IS a soup, just a thick one.

It is much thicker and I think it may have potatoes in it too. SOME chowders have corn...as in chicken corn chowder. GOOD QUESTION

chowders are generally made with dairy and thickened with a starch.

You don't put as much water in it and some recipes also call for flour which thickens the liquids.
