What should i be looking for when selecting horses to back each way. ie how many runners, length of race, handicaps, flat/hurdles etc

As far as each-way betting goes, you will get paid out on the first 3 horses if there are more than 8 runners and on the first 4 horses in 16+ runner handicaps. Some bookmakers will pay out on 5th place in the big handicaps (Grand National, The Lincoln etc) but you need to ask your bookmaker first.

Personally I avoid handicaps and jump races, simply because I know the flat much better.
