I'm finally crawling into the technological era and am going to buy a digital camera. I'm definitely looking at the low end of the market (£40-70), but what should I be looking for and how much should I be expecting to pay?

From my limited understanding, the main differentiators for a digital camera are the megapixels and the hard drive space. I'm just looking for camera-quality pictures, and ... say, space to store 100 pictures.

Any ideas? Also, if you have any links to reviewing websites or suggested products, that would be great.

Batteries!! You want a camera that takes AA batteries,
these are readily available everywhere!

Megapixels!! You want at least 5

Zoom!! You want at least 3X optical zoom

If the price range is alittle too much for you, buy used on ebay.

With your budget of £40-70 the choice is really limited.
Look first on OPTICAL zoom (forget digital zoom), then on megapixels (You will hardly find a new camera with less than 5, and that meets your needs by far), and it would also be fine if you could test the camera, whether she takes the picture immediately after you press the shutter or after a short or long delay.
A "nice to have", but impossible for that price, would be an image stabilizer.
How many pictures you can store depends on the memory card you use, on the size and quality of the pictures.

There are so many factors that you can base your decision on. The key to me is a good optical zoom lens !

Think about your camera use and then look at a digital camera buying guide. Many guides are posted on the net. Using my preference for a rechargeable battery and such tools I recently purchased a Canon SD600 and our son purchased a Sony W100. We are both happy with our point and shoot solutions. Neither of us got a large optical zoom lens which would have been nice.

I just recently bought a camera. It works great. I got it at Sam's Club. Here is what I looked for. Look for a camera that has great zooming effects. Also, one with an image stabiliser. Now, if you want to take more pictures get a camera with a smaller screen. If you want a bigger screened camera go with a bigger memory card.

OPTICAL ZOOM. That is the true mark of a digital camera. and also megapixals.
You also want a camera with a fast processor so your not waiting for the camera between shots. DID I HELP? If so please vote for me.
you can always upgrade the flash memory. But if the camera is low end you will not be as happy.

youre now at the time when mp is not a big issue anymore...anything over 4-5 is fine for your purposes. Make sure it takes universally available memory card, and then memory isnt an issue either. Ive got a Kodak with the docking station to hook up to the pc and Ive been happy with it for 2 years now.
