Psychiatry is more of an art than a science, While I suppose a good psychiatrist could work with the NHS, I suspect that a really good one could get paitients that would pay him.

The same trick-cylists work privately and in the NHS. As someone said: the only difference is the waiting list.

But I'd recommend not seeing a psychiatrist at all: they have no objective test for mental illness; and they've never cured anybody.

Don't believe me? Try the horse's mouth:

Watch the video, it's a random sample of psychiatrists at a conference admitting the truth. It's not even an "art", I think the word "scam" would be more appropriate.

If you're female consider this: walking the city streets at night is safer for women than visiting a psychiatrist.

Bet I won't be getting "best answer" for this one :-)

Share and enjoy.

I would use the NHS resources you're entitled to, so see an NHS psychiatrist first and if you're not happy with your care then pay privately.

As a nurse i've worked in the NHS and the private sector, paying doesn't always mean you get better treatment, it can mean you'll be seen a lot faster, that's all. Your GP may give you an urgent referal though depending on the severity of your condition.

Ask the GP how long you can expect to wait to be seen, they should give you a rough idea of how long a wait you will have.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the psychiarists that work in the NHS also work privately.

You will be paying a lot of money for the same person you may see for free in the NHS.

I know the NHS has it's problems, but do you actually think that the healthcare professionals are at a lower standard of practice too? If so that is a poor judgement to make. Just because we work in the NHS does not mean we lower our standards of care.

Please bear that in mind before you pre judge.

My psychiatrist works for the county (I am disabled) and he is wonderful for me. If I god a job I would like to keep him.
But I think the county would want me to move to a private practice so that my "time" could be used by another person in need.
So, yes I would pay to see him, but I probably would not be allowed.

With NHS, there is always long waiting lists - if you pay, you get to see doc when you want.
