I have an 8 month old Lab/German Shepard mix, Roxy. Right now Roxy is not alone for more than 3 hours, but during the day when my husband is home, he is asleep because he has a night job. When I am home from work at night Roxy goes to bed when I do. She has plenty of toys and rawhides to chew on but she recently started chewing up our shoes and has ruined 4 pairs! We moved them into a closet but how can we deter this behavior in the future and keep her from chewing on other things??

Other than keeping your shoes out of site you could try a spray called Bitter Apple. I've used it to keep my dogs from chewing the furniture and pillows. Don't know if it will work on shoes but could try. Also try the Galileo dog bones from Petsmart (just buy the one recommended for your size/ chewing strength dog) they seemed to work when no other toys did for me.

Chewing shoes is a way of dogs dealing with separation anxiety. They choose shoes because they smell the most like us. When you go away, contain her. Either in a room or a cage. This will give her a sense of security and control. If you do see her chewing the shoes, take the shoe away and give her something that is acceptable (like a bone). Give her lots of praise when she is doing the right thing. Good luck and hope this helps.

she will not stop chewing until she is 2. You can reward good behavior. put up anything you don't want her to chew. take things out a little at a time set them down and reward her for not chewing then put them away after constant practice she will understand

problem
"My dog is chewing all our shoes!!? "

Solution
Pick them up!!!

Bet you wouldn't leave a $100 bill laying on the floor for the dog to get, so why on earth would you leave a $100 pair of shoes laying on the floor for the dog to get.
Put the shoes in a closet and close the door,,,,,, problem solved.

My dog Boo. Lab/Dalmation all black with two white diamond on her chest where you see her spots.

Anyway, when Boo was two, she chewed up my dad's hat. He told her, "you chew up one more thing, I'll take you to Belle Isle leave you and never give you a second thought.

Boo is 12 now and hasn't chewed up another thing.

Put loads of tabasco on a pair you don't care about and leave them out so she can chew on them. She won't chew shoes any more

Put Roxy in a crate when you can't watch her.
Dogs LOVE crates. You will save your sanity & your shoes!

She is teething and/or bored. She shouldn't be left out alone if your husband isn't available to watch her. She could seriously injure herself. You should get her a large crate or consider taking her to doggie daycare.
