The typical cause of anorexia is a poor self image, low self esteem, and then the social cause would be the influence of the current emaciated runway models.

Socialization is such that women must be pretty. Women look to see what is considered pretty in society and currently its extremely thin women. This creates a pressure on women to emulate this emaciation with the belief that they will be beautiful. Women who fell exceptionally unattractive or have other causes for poor self image are more likely to emulate models even if it means they starve themselves

There may be a genetic reason for some cases of anorexia. Often anorexics have family trees with a history of obsessive compulsive disorder. The two disorders appear to be linked but they are not sure how. Genes compounded with emotional needs for control and social pressures from media, family, peers etc may all play a role in the disorder. Some studies have shown a correlation between sexual abuse and anorexia.
