hi, i used to own a dobbie who was scared of the hoover, what i did was, gently introduced her to it, turning it on and off, giving her biscuits when she is ok, takes a while its not an over night thing though , it helps also if you get down to the dogs level when you switch the hoover on so she isnt intimidated by you standing over her and pushing the hoover, and plenty of praise also if she does well, hope this helped. jane.

I had pitbulls who would attack the vaccum. It was rather funny till she tore a piece off. Wasn't so funny then. Anyhow, you have to make it a pleasant experience.
Have the vaccum out w/o it being on. Just have it sit there. Let the dogs come investigate on their own. You can pet them and treat them as they are getting to know the hoover.
Although it may not be the hoover itself they are scared of but the frightening noise that it makes. The noise is then associated to the object that it comes from.
My Golden sits in the corner while I vacuum and my Setter follows it around - though at a distance. So it depends on the dog and the perception that they have w/ the cleaner.
Never chase your dog with it, and if they are in the way turn the cleaner off and move them first, don't force them to move with it. That creates a negative impression.
You may solve this problem with having it sit out and letting them get to know it on their own, or it may be a problem due to the noise that never gets solved.
It's really up to the dog.
Good Luck

I think that dogs either are frightened of the hoover or think that it is a treat to their environment and try to chase it.
My dog is scared of the hoover, I think the best thing to do was to lock the dogs in the kitchen or outside somewhere away from the noise.
I doubt very much you can make him like the hoover but if kept away from it then there is no problem of scaring the dogs.

The true answer to that is the way a dog see's the hoover or car. Most dogs will attack a hoover because it is in their territory. Some will cower down because of fear of the noise. Same goes for cars.

I think you kinda have to ignore it, she won't come to any harm. My collie is petrified - she stood on the hoover, switching it on when she was a puppy, and got a blast of air up her bum from the vent, now if you go near the cupboard where the hoover is kept - even though thats also where her food is kept - she bolts for the sofa. If you go anywhere near her with it she runs as fast as possible up the stairs.
Its not nice seeing them scared, but they aren't being hurt by it and as long as you aren't hoovering everyday, I wouldn't woory too much about it

Slowly, slowly. Get it out and just leave it off for a bit, give her a treat. Do this for a couple of days until she is used to it.. one step at a time, and you will get there eventually. You could also try talking to the hoover (no i am not mad) but dont look at her or say anything if she barks at it or cries - this is confirming her fear, just reward the positive.

I had one who was same. What happened is that I was interupted while vacuuming once and just laid the thing down and went to do other things. I found my dog giving it a thorough examination. So I decided to just leave it out for a time and let him get to see it while it's "dead".
He quickly got over his fear after the dead thing was more familiar. Then when it was alive again it was more of a curiousity than fear.
I now can vacuume the leaves off of this dog and he's not thrilled but totally unafraid.
Best of luck,

leave the hoover switched on, leave it standing, and just let the dogs go crazy for a short time, they will soon realise the hoover wont hurt them, it worked for my son, he now sit on the hoover while I'm using it, bless xx

My cat runs every time she sees the vacuum cleaner, when she hears it she hides and wait til the noise stops. I don't think there is any way you can stop animals from being scared. The sound is scary and the suction makes them think their fur will fly off.
