Because Islam operates by applying huge psychological pressure on its followers to stay in Islam. To be allowed to leave Islam freely would send out a message to other believers that they too could walk away easily, that cannot be tolerated as their numbers would dwindle and it would weaken there argument about Islam being a strong growing religion. If Islam was as great as they say they would not need to use any form of intimidation or violence on their followers they would allow them total freedom of choice. When people join a cult very few can walk away. Islam is simply the biggest cult in the world.

Simple. It's called FEAR.
If people become intelligent or educated enough to realise that they've been indoctrinated and that the religion is basically fictitious drivel, they will leave it. If it's allowed, others may well follow and the religion will decay into the dust of primitive history along with so many others.
The priesthood dare not risk losing their jobs for life and their power ofer the populace so they force people to stay by threats of killings.

Islam is approx 500 years younger than Christianity,
christianity has matured, whereas Islam is still "stuck" in the equivalent of the 16th century.
In the 16th century christians were extremely strict, hopefully it will mature and catch up with the needs and aspirations of the 21st century!

This is similar to people equating virginity with holyness and killing people because they slept with someone before marriage.
Theres no a single source in Islam that says your bride has to be virgin before you marry her.
It says she has to be a chaste person...and chastity isnt about virginity at all..its a state of constant cleanliness and lasts even when youre married. And chastity is required for both parties.
People can leave Islam freely, what is not allowed is the approval and acceptance of it.
Theres a huge gap between not accepting something and killin someone for it.

jackie - that is laughable. Threats and fear are the basis of the power of nearly every religion, especially Christianity. How about the fact that if you dont accept Jesus and the bible you will be damned for eternity. Doesn't that qualify as a threat? You might even say that it qualifies as the ultimate threat. Freakin typical.....

Christianity started before Islam and is therefore a bit more mature about certain things. I was going to edit to mention culture but Arek has got there first.

I am sick of people making out that Christians are all perfect beings whilst all Muslims are evil. Look at Christian history: countless people were tortured and killed for being 'heretics'. Radical Christian extremist groups in America murder doctors and nurses at abortion clinics. We're not such a perfect religious group either!

Because in Christianity you have a free choice, & in Islam, they try to take that free choice away.

Hi, I'm a muslim and I would like to explain.
It's a culture Vs Islam thing again.
Some people takes one part culture and then one part Islam, then label the whole thing as Islam. They compromise their religion for their freakin' culture. And if it's a violent culture, well tough luck.
Generally people don't leave Islam, Islam if presented properly there wouldn't be any reason to leave it. I blame the bad parents, terrorists and hypocrites.
Peace out.
