CCTV like anything else intended for good, can be used for evil. For example, it is great for keeping an eye on what is on in sensitive areas of a workplace, but employers are now using it as a primary tool to spy on their employees, and the worst part is that there are now laws in place in certain state which sanctions this, and the employees spied on have no recourse, other than to quit their jobs.

Depends what you mean - and whose workplace...... if you mean IPCCTV as opposed to the analogue and wired old style then it has removed the need for a phycial wired link to a recorder and therefore a nearby control room, so the range and proliferation has greater increased as the environmental requirements have decreased. The other aspect is that as the signal is digital rather than anologue it has removed the one to one relationship with both recorder (video) that used to exist - high volume hard disk is now used for optincal storage rather than tape or optical jukebox as the price per megabite has dropped and similarly the operational screen has moved to higher ratios, as movement detection software using image comparison can make the job much simpler.
