Hello, im 18 years old and im 20 weeks pregnant and about to move to Nottingham. I have heard a lot about MRSA in hospitals in East Midlands, and how it can affect newborns and pregnant women. I cant really find much information about it on the internet and feel a bit silly asking about this, but what are the chances of getting MRSA when I will go for my appointments to see my midwife, or even worse, when I go into Labour? Please can somebody help and explain? Thank you.

Usually MRSA, or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus is found in hospitals. It is what is called a "nosocomial" infection-an infection you get while you are in the hospital. So chances are if you have a mid-wife, and you aren't going to the hospital to deliver the baby, you should have nothing at all to worry about. If you are going to a hospital though, I would tell them to make sure they are washing their hands, otherwise you might have serious complications with it. Overall, hospitals will be best to have your baby in because they will have better equipment, but as far as MRSA alone is concerned, you won't have to worry about it with a mid-wife. Good luck with it all!

I work in a women and children's hospital. Good hand washing. watch and make sure before a exam they wash their hands with soap and water. Don't be shy about asking. A good health professional will not mind at all and should understand your concern. I wash my hands during a 12 hour shift at least 20 times and use antibacterial wipes on the desk and phones where I work. you can never be to careful. When you go to deliver your baby they should have sterile equipment. Ask if they have a autoclave. That is equipment used to sterilize medical instruments. I wish you good luck

my wife was exactly the same as you. so we decided to go for a water birth at home. it was so much better than going to hospital. and the experience was something out of this world. it costs money, but at least you wont miss your tv programs if you are at home. and after that, you dont have to go to hospital ever again, your midwife comes and checks on you all the time. and the only place you need to go is the doctors. you need to think about your childs health and what you think is best for him/her. good luck with your prenancy, and enjoy your new baby.
