I suggest calmly looking at them, remind them that THEY used to smoke and obviously understand, despite the health risks, know that smoking is a natural (for lack of better words) mood stabilizer. If they cannot respect you and your choices, then perhaps taking a break from them is needed. This will allow you the opportunity to take matters into your own hands and finish your exams to the best of your ability and at the same time, will allow your friends some time to question if it's truly worth throwing a friendship away all over a pack of cigarettes.
I am a smoker and there is nothing worse than having an ex-smoker tell a current smoker that they shouldn't be smoking. We all understand the health risks as they were thrown in our faces daily. I'm sure you get that, and I'm sure everyone else gets that.
I hope your friends realize that instead of supporting you, they're only driving you away.
Good luck with your exams and when YOU and ONLY you decide to one day try to quit, then good luck with that as well!

I smoke every morning while having my coffee. I like it and i'll sit on my deck and have the smokes and coffee. This bull sh it that everyone is attacking smokers and telling them to quit just makes me mad as h ell.
I've quit before once for 7 years straight, another time for 6 years. I didn't start smoking until i was 25 i'm 52 now. I smoke marlboro lights, but i also, put a waterpik filter device on each smoke that i have. It cut's down on the nicotine intake.
In my state i can't smoke in a public park, on the sidewalk, and in my vehicle if children are present. I can't smoke in bar, restaurant or anywhere else in public. Which i find to be a crock of sh it.
I pay good money for my smokes, alot of state and federal taxes are included in that $31.50 carton of smokes i buy myself every 2 weeks. Only place i can smoke without being hassled is on my property in my backyard or in the house or at a casino.
If you like smoking do it, if you don't smoke i say keep your opinions to your goddamned self.

Maybe your ex-smoker friends have the right idea. If they only bug you about this one thing, they might be looking out for you. If they also bug you about the way you dress, what you eat, why you date etc then they're probably just annoying pests.
Another thing to consider is that smoking does not calm you down per say. It only returns you to a calm state. Any aggitation you feel is amplified by the time inbetween cigarettes, which is actually a short withdrawal period.
But the only way i know of to keep people from aggitating you with criticism is to simply ignore them. When people criticize me I pretend to read a paper, stare off into space or something else that sends the non-verbal cue that they're statements are so worthless that I won't even acknowledge them.

Get some friends that can put with your stinky habit. I was a smoker for over 50 years. and never realized how much smoking stinks.. I quit so maybe I'll live long enough to see my all my grand-children and hopefully some great-grand-children. All you can do is stay away from your friends after all they are just concerned about your health.

Im afraid you either tell them to get off your back and risk losing them as friends or you quit smoking which you dont want to do. Either way it is not going to be easy. If they are true friends however then they will back off and stand by you. I do feel for you. Good luck.

Take it from me...they will respect you if you respect them...
Try to be more considerate and dont smoke around them...Explain that you "need" it now for your nerves but also try to include them in your plan to stop smoking..They are only looking out for you...because they've come to realise the dangers of smoking..just like me...i think people rebel when they are constantly asked to do something..(like me too) but after a while you do realise that smoking is just a waste of money and a terrible habbit...I understand "the need" to smoke, but trust me, its not worth it...Good luck!

You dont need to smoke your brain has made a link between cigarettes and its self you need to break the link by telling it you dont need one.
I smoke myself but I know I dont need it I just like it and yes It does my head in when people tell me to stop but I dont smoke around non smokers anyway i always feel bad.
You will quit when you are ready to quit in your own time, good luck x

Stay away from the friends until after exams.
If they can't stop bugging you for even four weeks, just cut them off.
PS Judging from the other answers, I guess a lot of people feel entitled to tell other people what to do!

just tell them that if they were your friends they would understand. Say that you want to keep smoking because of exam stress and that it is your decision, tell them what you said on here, that they hated people saying that to them when they smoked, they should stop being hypocrits.
