The three biggest reasons I have seen for personal injury accidents on my job:
1. Inattention (daydreaming, talking on cell phone, eating etc..)
2. Too much of a hurry to get there (speeding, aggressive driving)
3. Impairment by alcohol or drugs

The human race is a very weird race, they are always in a hurry, and not only that, there are drivers out there that become very aggressive because they are stuck in traffic, and that is when the trouble starts, they lose total control of all rationalism, and they might do something that freaks the other drivers out and panic sets in.
In South Africa I would say at least 60 - 70% of all accidents are caused by mini-bus drivers, because they are carting people to and from work and the quicker they can get to their destination, the quicker they can turn around for the next load of people without giving much thought to the rest of the people that are also trying to get to work, they are inconsiderate and rude and they stop anywhere they want to breaking all sorts of rules as they go along, and there is never ever a traffic cop to be seen. Look I'm not saying that the other people are innocent, not by a long shot, they violate traffic rules because there is never any officials around when the offence occurs, and when they do get caught then they say but it was not my fault

Sometimes people violate traffic laws because they simply aren't concentrating. Others do it because they think they know better. Some simply have no regard for the rules.
Personally, I think some rules should be bent or broken in certain circumstances. A generally-clear 70 limit six lane motorway, for example, does not need everyone doing 70 or less for safety. Those that can safely control their car at higher speeds should be able to travel at such speeds. Those that insist on doing 90 whilst weaving in and out of busy traffic however should be picked out and reprimanded.
Using mobile phones in the UK while driving is now illegal unless you are using a hands-free kit. Far too many people violate this law. Sending text messages while driving is simply inexcusable (I send messages when at the wheel on occasion, but only at red lights with the car in Neutral and the parking brake on!).
I think overall it is the simple thought that you won't get caught. I didn't think I would get caught doing 70 in a 40 zone on an empty road at 3am - the dark blue Volvo I passed however thought differently and the blue lights behind his radiator grille weren't for show! I learned my lesson that night and thankfully only got a verbal warning!

People are mostly selfish. This should explain many things.
Some people are actually playing games when they're behind the wheel. I like to drive a big old nasty looking pickup with a huge steel black bumper (it's more like a ramming tool than one of these cheap little bumpers that most people have on their vehicles) out front.
I never wash my truck. It would be impossible for me to care less about the scratches and crappy paint job. The whole point is to keep the morons away that are only into vanity. Plus anyone who thinks about messing with me on the road will find out pretty quickly how that bumper works once I'm in their rearview.
Otherwise I just mind my own business and smile at the sour puss faces that are driving around me.

First off, let me just say that they aren't traffic "accidents" ...they are collisions. People get away with calling them accidents because they didn't intend to get in one. But they did intend to speed or violate some other law that caused the collision.
People violate traffic laws because they think they can. Because traffic laws are minor in comparison to others. Most traffic laws are infractions, only punishable by a fine, and not jail or other imprisonment.
What people do not realize is that although their violation of a traffic law may seem minor, it pales in comparison to the results of a deadly collision possibly resulting from their violation.

Most people have forgotten how to drive personally I think everyone should be given tougher tests, and be retested before renewing their license some people think they have a right to drive when it is clearly a privilege. Most all accidents are caused by negligence or just plain stupidity. They need to be aware of other things as well such as manoeuvrability's of other vehicles on the road , and how to use turn signals . I was hit a few months ago buy a guy who had on his 4-way flashers (emergency flashers) he thought he had the right of way because he had to get home for an emergency .He did not know it was illegal to use those lights while his car was in motion so he was charged. I wonder how he passed his test ,and did not know this.....

Most of the time, it's just thoughtlessness. Known in some cop circles as, Driving While Stupid.
A lot of drivers get so deep in the routine of driving they are almost an automation, not really paying attention to what they are doing. When something unexpected occurs, they are caught by surprise and do not react in time.
Other drivers are too busy "multi-tasking" to drive safely. They are on the cell phone, adjusting the radio, talking to the other people in the car, eating, etc. They are so busy doing other stuff, they miss speed signs, stop signs, don't see people crossing the street, etc.
Then there are the drunks, the impatient, and the arrogant, who are so wrapped up in themselves they simply don't give a rat's behind to how they drive.

Because everyone is in a rush. But on the contrary, people die while obeying all traffic rules. That is why it is called an accident.

Feeling embarrassed ought to ward off others to violate. regardless of the indisputable fact that, if the attittudes of the motorists are on the different, there'll be better violators because they're going to anticipate that they are going to receive presents.
