I don't know. If your pet has fleas they are feeding....on your pet. Fleas cause heartworm. If your pet has fleas take the pet to a vet to be treated and have the vet recommend what to use on your furniture, rugs, dogs bed.....

Hi Jojo!!
Fleas are known to remain in the pupal stage from five days to five weeks in the absence of hosts. Adults emerge from the pupal case when vibrations from pets or humans let them know a host is near. This is one reason why people returning to an unoccupied home may suddenly be attacked by an army of fleas.
Adult fleas must feed on blood in order to reproduce; however, adults can live for long periods without feeding. Fleas usually live and breed most heavily where pets rest. Persons coming near these resting places are also subject to attack. If fleas are established in a home, they will feed on man as well as on the pets. The usual places of attack are the ankles and lower
portions of the legs.

Contrary to belief, fleas cannot go through several generations without having a blood meal. The entire life cycle of a flea can require from two weeks to two years. Hot, wet, summer months favor egg laying. Hot, dry periods give maximum adult production, so greatest adult flea populations are produced in August to September.

You don't really have to worry about how long the fleas can live w/out food.. you have to realize how fast of a rate they multiply at! You can't just get rid of the fleas by hoping they die off, you have to buy some sort of flea medication. Even take your animal to the vet for a flea dip, buy a fine-tooth comb to keep them brushed and to get the new eggs off before they hatch, and once the fleas are gone, buy a flea collar.

The secret to controlling fleas is to control the eggs and larvae. They are far more numerous than adults. Adult fleas usually make up only about 2 percent of the total population. Larvae don't feed on animals as do the adults. Flea larvae feed on organic debris, primarily dry blood. That's why keeping the pets and the environment clean is so important.

If your pet has fleas you need to get flea medication ASAP. You can't try to starve them, you need to kill them.
