Well..I recommend you go to the vet to get it done the first time if you've never done it before. They can show you the proper way of doing it so you don't cut them too short and damage the puppy's foot. It's really not that expensive. Maybe 10-15 dollars, and then after that you can do it yourself.

Edit: when you cut a dog's nails there should be NO BLOOD. If you get blood you cut them too short.

Hi Indian princess!!
STEP 1: Use trimmers designed for pets. Ask your veterinarian or a groomer for advice about what types of nail trimmers are best for your dog and how to use them properly.
STEP 2: Make sure the clippers are sharp.
STEP 3: Look article :http://www.askedweb.com/askedweb/How_To_Trim_A_Dogs_Nails/
- How To Trim A Dogs Nails

Important:
1. Give your dog a treat after trimming her nails.
2. Never attempt to trim your dog's nails with clippers designed for use on humans.
3. If you trim with a dremel tool - Paw hair can EASILY become wrapped around a dremel tool if you aren't careful. Ouch! It's very important to isolate the surrounding paw hair away from the nail before you get the dremel tool close to the paw.

you could do it yourself. but if it is a rescued dog, you really dont know what kind of homelife it had before. i would have the vet do it at least the first time. there should be more people like you in the world. taking in a rescued pet takes a lot of love. not knowing really what it has been through. good luck

You can do it yourself if you are comfortable with the idea and if your dog will tolerate you doing it. However do be careful that you do not cut into the quick as it will start to bleed imensly. If the nail is black id suggest taking him to the vet just to be safe, but if the nail is clear or white you can see the red in the middle whic is the quick and try to stay away from it. hope this helps you out! Good luck!

I've trimmed more dog nails than I care to remember.
Expect blood. Sometimes allot.....My actual advise would be take the dog to the vet and ask if they can show you how to do it. You can actually buy the dog nail trimmers at most marts. pet section. Even though I know what I'm doing I make mistakes once in awhile. They'll really bleed if you cut to short SO>>>>> go to the vet and ask if they show you how.
I've never had one die from it. Keep em away from furniture or anything you don't want to get blood on...New carpet. Vet first.

Let the vet show you how to do it. My dog let me do it for the first 3 years and then one day my father tried to help out and cut one too short. Now he won't let me go anywhere near his toes. For me its worth the few bucks to let someone else do it. I try to take him to the same groomer every time so he gets to know and trust her. We go every three to four weeks even though he doesn't need it...just so he can start getting used to it again. Good luck!

You need to be trained to do it right, so go to the vet the first time and pay attention. Also--- this is important.... start training your dog to be ok with you messing with his toes.

You should have it done for you and have them show you how its done. If you have a groomer you can go there as well and they are likely less expensive than a vet and can do just as well.
