Get a wedding planner (a book that will help you know what to do, and help you keep track of things). Cake? That's a tough one. You actually can do anything you want. Cake and weddings are just so ingrained into our thinking that it's hard to see past cake. People just equate the two. If you're having a dinner, you could just skip the cake and have some other desserts served. However, you will miss having the traditional cutting of the cake. (IF that's what brides do in your country.) However, you can always have a "dummy cake" and still do the cake cutting with the one real piece in the back. Then serve others another dessert. That's a possiblity. Best of luck. Sorry I don't have a really good idea for you.

Some people do cup cakes in the shape of a wedding cake, I have heard of donuts being used the same way. Some people do little individual cakes. You could really do anything you want/. I have been to a few weddings that have multiple dessert choices instead of a cake.

some people make a "cake" out of cupcakes stacked in the shape of a wedding cake. You can also have cookies, muffins, brownies, basically any kind of dessert you want.

I was reading something yesterday and someone commented about how someone else had used a few hat boxes (the round ones) and stacked them, and then decorated them to look like a cake, but filled the boxes with different deserts.. i thought it was a fantastic idea and i bet it could be done to look very pretty, or whatever you're going for :) try cupcakes, or something of the sort :)
good luck!

While looking for my own wedding cake, I found that there are bakeries that specialized in wedding cheescakes. It looks just like a wedding cake, but it's a cheesecake. I sampled some, and it was super yummy!

-white and chocolate cupcakes with heart shape candies on top
-cherry/strawberry cheese cake with a design on top with cherries or strawberries, like the word love spelled out
-an asortment of donuts, dipped in different flavors
-Cookies with a outline of bride and groom, have the wedding colours for the icing
-Chocolate brownies, some with nuts others with none for those who might be alergic
-Muffins are not that common but can be mixed with cookies and donuts
Hope I helped, You can also go where they make wedding cakes and ask them for any ideas and see what they come up with.
Congrads!

cupcakes are a good alternative.
Or have a dessert buffet - a range of cakes, puddings, pastries. It can be quite exciting and interesting.

I was really impressed at how well a twinkie wedding cake turned out! I saw it while I was browsing cookbooks at a store. Here's a picture (sorry about the long url):
