Im a vet and havent been to one before. Is it totally free? How lengthy is the initial paperwork?

Unless you signed up within 2 years of discharge, you may not be eligible for care at at VA hospital.
Additionally, the care is only free if you qualify for 'priority' care -meaning you have service-connected illness or injury, or your income level is less than the threshold.

It is free to see a Dr. You had better figure on at least a 2 month delay in seeing one though after you make an appt. They charge a very nominal fee for prescriptions. They will send you the paperwork to fill out. It's a few pages long..no big deal.
