Two planes headed towards each other, and are currently 440 miles apart. If one is going 240 miles per hour and the other 360 miles per hour, how far apart will they be four minutes before they meet? (Extra credit if you can do this one without pen and paper.)

40 miles apart?? Combining their speeds we know that they are closing the gap at 600 miles per hour, which is 10 miles per minute (600 divided by 60 minutes in an hour). Therefore they will go 40 miles in the last four minutes (4 minutes times 10 miles). i'm a math addict!

Speed that the distance between them is reducing is 240 + 360 = 600 miles per hour.
So at 4 mins before they meet, they are
600 miles per hour x 4 mins = 10 miles per min x 4 min = 40 miles.

I hope they don't meet...because they have security devices in place to avoid that.
Will those kick it 40 miles in?
