My birthday is coming up in March and i'm planning to spend it in Phuket for bout a week... So what's good there besides the sun sea and sand? I've been to Bangkok a few times and i really LOVED it!!! Really a shopping paradise!!! (It burned a BIG whole im my hubby's pocket!! hehe...) So, is Phuket gonna be similar like Bangkok? Any great things to do there? i.e. para-gliding, ATV, rafting etc...

Thank you guys for sharing your tips... As i've surf the web bout Phuket, i came to realise that there are a lot of beaches around... Being a first timer, i don't really know which beach is the best and which hotel to choose from... I'm thinking of renting a car. Would it be good? So what say you?

My biggest advice is to steer clear of Patong for the most part. During the day you can venture around, and maybe to stop off and see a tiger show at night(lady boy show, HEY don't knock it, they are good shows), but otherwise it's pretty seedy. Anywhere north or south of patong is good to go.
What isn't there to do. Diving, jet skiing, para-sailing, boat trips, exploring on a scooter, all kinds of ways to make your husband bleed. The last time I was there my friends and I chartered a dive boat for a day, got in 2 dives then went island hopping and getting RIPPED with our own private tour boat and guides. It was one of those days that will be burned in my mind for life.
There is really SOOOOO much to do in Phuket you won't have any trouble keeping yourself occupied.

Phuket is definitely not the same as Bangkok. Phuket is the place to do water activities. It has some of the finest beaches in the region and some of the clearest waters around. So it will be good for diving and snorkeling. There are many islands and resorts around too, so you can go island hopping and even island resort stay. Check this out at the pier with the boat service people.
It has themed attractions around, including the popular Simon Cabaret and Tiffany Show. You can look at www.tourismthailand.org for details on them.
Nearby is Krabi, also beaches galore, including the popular James Bond Island, and Leonardo di Caprio Beach.
So you can find plenty to do to fill up your stay.
Have a good time.

There are so many things you can do when you're in Phuket like get some tan, go to other islands, go to spa or have some good seafood. As you know everything is cheap in Thailand so you can do all of those for cheap.
I like Phuket better than Bangkok (eventhough I grew up in BKK). It's more lay back and people are a lot nicer down south.
About renting a car, I think you should consider renting a taxi. It is more convinence with your own driver and he knows the way around. Just don't forget to bargain!! But if you'd like to explore the islands by yourself, it'd be fun to drive a car around, too.
Have fun in Phuket!!

oh oh i know very well i came from thailand. phuket much different to bangkok because in bangkok there is not any beach but there are alots shopping centres. but in phuket you can relax yourself on beach. if you get up early and come for walk on beach without not many people on beach yet you will see lovely colour water, the beach is clean and with white smoothly sand. and you will keep that picture in your mind to remind you of Phuket, and that picture won't be away from your eyes, when you have no time to go to Phuket any more you will miss it.

To me, Phuket was a lot different to Bangkok. The seedier side was more on display, rarely a western male with a western female, yanno what I mean... Shopping was still good, the islands are definately worth while visiting, that's my tip!
