Two answers:
1. They are planning to get a tattoo and trust some total stranger to answer their questions instead of going to a place where they do them.
2. They think tattoos are cool and wanna share with everyone how cool they are by thinking of getting one.

Believe it or not, there are questions that can be answered, which don't require you to be a tattoo artist, just familiar with the industry. Professionals aren't the only ones who know anything at all about tattooing. Those are simple questions, or questions which can only be given vague answers. No offense or anything, because I have a lot of respect for true professionals, but a tattoo artist is no more qualified to answer questions like "will it hurt," "can minors be tattooed in *insert state here." and "what do you think of this for a tattoo" than any other person with reasonable tattoo experience and/or access to all the information on the internet. I personally have a fair amount of ink, but I've also done a lot of research on tattooing, through the internet, books, and questions to my own artist. I feel I have the right to give basic advice about tattooing. But I would never dream of giving very specific advice. And most of my posts do advise to consult a professional. On the other side of the fence, I see a lot of supposed "tattoo artist" or "piercers" giving horrible advice that anyone with a shred of knowledge of the industry knows isn't right. (Note this isn't directed at you, I have no reason to believe that you aren't perfectly qualified) It's easy to say your a tattoo artist. Some are, I'm sure some aren't. But there are "artists" out there who just suck. Bottom line, it's the internet, it's always best to seek professional advice no matter who you think you're getting advice from online.

well this is a tattoo forum so all of the questions should be tattoo related in some way. i'm pretty sure that most of the population is not planning on getting a tattoo but a lot of us who already have them will get enough to make up for those who lack them.

We like to share Ideas, and opinions about tattoos. Kind of like why there are so many Ford questions in the Ford category. People come here for advice about healing a tat placement ideas, and also a lot of piercing questions. Some of the regular answerers in this category are professionals in these industries as well.

It's clearly a big, big trend right now. I think it has to do with individuality. A person's tattoos identify him, even to the police or coroner. He is an individual, a one-of-a-kind. Also, tattoos are more often done for heavy religious or spiritual reasons these days than because a sailor got drunk or a tourist got wasted in Margueritaville.

I think it's because it's such a big thing in someones life. It's forever, it's painful and it's something not anyone can tell you about. I mean You want to be sure you know everything you can before you get one don't you?
