It's not so bad if it's a child or a neighbour doing you a favour like telling you you left your car lights on or something, but when it's a person who is calling from house to house, like the meter man, postman or some survey/door to door guy, it makes me spit feathers! They should know better. It's plain rude!

There is a big wooden sign that states "Please Shut Gates" and a spring won't make the latch catch the hook will it, only a turn of the handle will? No matter how busy they are, if they can open the gate, why can't they be polite enough to shut it?

Anyway, what's the matter with most of you who are seemingly defending the caller? I don't think it's too much to ask that people who enter my garden should refrain from feeling free to leave it unsafe for any children or pets of the house when they exit, especially given that there is a main road outside with huge lorries speeding through and signs requesting that the gates be closed. Regardless of the situation of my home though, what happened good manners? I was always taught to leave things as I find them....

It is rude I totally agree. The winds are always high where I live and when our ignorant postman leaves the gate swinging it bangs and crashes back and forth, it weakens the hinges and all because it's too much trouble for him to shut the gate as he leaves. An open gate to an opportunist thief is an invitation for him to take anything from the garden too. My sons go-cart was stolen from the garden and I blame it on the gate being left open.
It makes me MAD when callers leave my gate open too!!

That is annoying. I guess those people are city folk; out in the country many more people understand the concept of shutting gates.

First off, yes that is incredibly rude of them. You should attach a cute sign to the gate door that says "Please close me !" with a smiley face or cat.

Secondly, be grateful you have a home, electricity, and a gate to surround it.

U must write a sign post clearly, shut the door, or other instruction u want them to comply, how are they supposed to know ? They are busy calling from house to house, doing their jobs.

Well, hate is too strong a word....Yeah, it's annoying. I put out a sign that mentions that the dogs might get out, that usually scares them into closing it.

DUH, put a spring on it, AND (get this) a latch that WILL hook when the gate is closed. Or lock the dam* thing and keep them all out. You've got some pretty serious problems going in your life, poor thing.

that's why you should consider installing a spring mounted fixture to your gate that automatically closes the gate..

Keep your gate locked, and give keys to your family.
