KL to Hatyai is about 500km up-north. There are no direct bus services to Hatyai from Kuala Lumpur. As such, you may require to travel up to a northern city in Malaysia (Butterworth or Alor Star) and take a connecting to Hatyai.
Your best & hassle free option would be taking a bus to Butterworth for less than US$10 (Butterworth to Hatyai is another 200km) and from there you have 2 options, by bus or train to Hatyai. Both the bus & train stations are situated within walking distance. The train (Thai Railways) will depart Butterworth at 2.00pm & will reach Hatyai at 7.00pm for approx US$20.
Alternatively, fly AirAsia (book in advance for dirt cheap fare) from KL to Alor Star & take a Thai operated tour van to Hatyai (Alor Star to Hatyai is only 80km). There are no stage buses running to Hatyai, so you may have to enquire tour van services from any travel agency in Alor Star or Butterworth.
Good luck!

twinspark has it on the nose, but I'll expound a bit.
Air Asia is the cheapest air if you can book your tickets far enough in advance, The only pisser is you have to fly to bangkok first then to Hat Yai, but all carriers are that way, none fly direct that I know of. It's about $35USD one way from KL to BKK, then $25USD from BKK to Hat Yai. It's about 3 hours to BKK, then an hour and a half to Hat Yai. I'll usually fly up, spend the night in BKK, then fly down to Hat Yai. From KL Sentral I usually take the Ekspres trian to KLIA, it's 35RM, or about $10USD to take the train, and it is FAST. It's about 80RM to take a taxi to Sentral to KLIA(about $20US) but it is quite a bit longer to get there. You can also get a luxury bus for about 25RM to KLIA, but make sure you take the right route(if I take the bus I take route 2 because it goes right by the concorde which is where I stay when I'm in KL).
I've only taken the train once and I took it from Hat Yai to KL. It was neat, pretty inexpensive, but WAYYYY too long. I think it was Train #7 on KTMB(malay rail), it left Hat Yai at like 3pm and got into KL at 8am the next morning. It was 55RM(about $15USD) for a "superior" sleeper. It was nice waking up and being almost in KL, but I was bored out of my mind until about midnight when I fell asleep.
By far the cheapest way to get there is by bus, but as I said it takes a LONG time, like 10 hours. I have local contacts in KL that usually do my arrangements for me so I have no idea how to arrange. When I take the bus I usually just show up at Pudu the day before and my friends get my tickets for me.
Taking a flight into Alor star, then taking a coach or even a taxi up to Hat Yai would be best as Twinspark said.
I usually just drive to one of the car parks by the border and take a cab into Hat Yai though.

You have 3 options, take a coach, train or a plane. I will recommend a plane as it is cheap as mentioned above, and you get there fast and without any hassle. Real convenience and cheaper than the train ticket.
