if you're not going to be working, then you can average it out at least €1000 euro a month, plus the cost of flight and insurance...

this is based on my own experience...I've found that hostels are around €15 euro a night average and 2 good meals costs the same as a nights sleep...

In some countries you will pay only €8 euros a night or less (look at Vietnam, China, India), in others (like Australia, Argentina, USA) it can be a lot more...

so look at the prices on Hostelworld.com to get an idea of how much it will cost you to sleep in a safe, comfortable, clean hostel, surrounded by other like-minded travellers then you will get an idea of how much you need...then you treble that figure :)

Also, you can ask on the Lonely Planet Thorntree, it's the worlds largets travellers / backpackers forum, so you're guaranteed to get good information.

Happy Trails

I´ve noticed this too. I live in Spain right next to the university for foreign students learning Spanish (I studied here a year and a half before permanently moving here) and there´s pretty much always been a 8 to 10 girl to guy ratio here. There are studies that show women have a higher aptitude than men in languages. It could be that females are more in touch with their artistic side than men. I don´t agree with the whole ¨some guy is paying for it¨ or ¨some poor schmuck along the way will pick up their tab¨ mentality (although I can´t deny this does happen). But I do think women have the opportunity more- especially if their families have the money or are students. I don´t want to get into a gender argument, but there´s a lot more pressure on a man to be a breadwinner, and for some men, it´s harder for them to get away to travel. As far as wanting to travel or not, is a personal preference and I think has little to do with gender. I know lots of men who like to travel, it´s just less possible because they have other responsibilities or simply can´t because of money.

It depends entirely on where you're going and what sort of standards you're after. Asia is generally very cheap, with accommodation starting at around 2-3 quid a night in India and even Thailand; South America is largely pretty low cost, whereas Central America is a little more - accommodation starting around 5-10 pounds. Obviously Australia, USA and Europe are going to cost a lot more.
Have you bought any Lonely Planet guides? They're a good starting point for any country. Even if you go read them in Waterstones for an afternoon, you'll get an idea of how much the countries you're visiting cost.
Have a great trip!

That depends on what kind of "spender" you are my friend went away for 3 months and brought 6000 euro as she wanted to be able to do anything she wanted without being restricted by lack of money, also my other friend has gone doing the year travelling and he brought 10k he spent 1k in the first week but he said it started to slow down abit then, i'd say at least 7 or 8 k (euro) if you dont intend on working but you'd probably get away with alot less if you're not a shopper and dont want to shop much while travelling.

Hi,

WOW! Wish i was going! Can i come :-)

It really depends on if you want to work when you get to these stops because obviously that will bring the initial money down as you can earn on the way, like doing orange picking in spain or working in a bar etc..

Also if its 7 stops, how long are you intending to stay in 1 place? I reckon you should work it on about £500/£700 per stop so if it eqauls out just over a month in each place then that sort of money should keep you going as most countries are cheaper than UK for cost of living!

Here are a couple of websites to help you out

Here is also a website on how to raise money for your travels

I hope this Info helps you out and i hope you have a Great time!

Take care

Hello,

(ANS) I used to work with a woman who was like yourself and wanted to travel the world ALOT. The way she appraoched this was to work for many months inorder to save up for her air tickets and to bank as much money as she could save. Before setting out on her advantures, she was gone a whole year at a time.

**Plan a definate route & the number of stops you intent to make and for roughly how long you might want to stay in each place.

After the cost of your air fares, calculate how much you normally live on here at home in Ireland per month and divide that down so you arrive at how much you live on per day (in ireland).

Take your daily living cost figure & double it, then calculate for each of the 7 places your length of stay (it will only be an estimate!) and for the number of days (daily living cost * by number of days) this should give you an approximate figure for how much you would need in order to live comfortable in each place without having to worry about money.

**This assumes that most of the places you are travelling to (through) will have the same or lower cost of living as Ireland of course.

Hope that helps?

its a tricky one as it depends on individual people.
My brother in-law has been away travelling for over a year now, not due back for another 3 months or so.
He only started with about £2000, but he finds work wherever he is staying, that way he can have a good living and pay for his next trip.

I guess if you wanted to just relax as a 9 month holiday, i would say about £5000, although this also depends on which area's your wanting to travel to. i.e if your wanting to travel to australia or new zealand its gonna cost!

Hi i don't think you would need that much money to start with because as you travel you could get little jobs like bar jobs to support your expenses. Good luck.
