I would like some opinions from anyone who does this sort of thing (or, for that matter, meditation in general) regarding what conditions you use? Do you play a calming soundtrack in the background, or just use complete silence?

Everybody knows the only proper music for psionics is Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565.

If you are trying to practice, I would suggest that you simply use a quiet environment with few distractions. Typically you may need a comfortable chair to sit in and a table - I use my kitchen which is brightly lit - but some prefer to sit in a more relaxed environment with subdued lighting and music. I think it makes little difference but you should try different things and see what works best for you. Just keep a notebook handy and make notes about the environment/setting before you begin each session marking down techniques goals and agenda and you may want to make notes afterwards also regarding results - when you find something seems to regularly produce better results for you - you can then make the decision based on your experience.

Personally I think the important issue is your state of mind... not your environment.

That said; I think anything that improves your focus and attention should help - I used to practice on a Tatame mat - and I used to practice a ritual cleansing of the practice space because I learned much of this as a form of "hara" technique... now I consider all that stuff fairly superfluous and ornament to the basic technology -- nice ornamentation and good for discipline, but not absolutely required if you have a strong enough will and are stubborn as a mule. If not then I imagine that you will find that there are many important lessons to be learned from the techniques of martial arts and the discipline that it brings, so I would encourage you to explore them as an area of research that would be helpful to your interest in the psychic disciplines as there is much in common between them.

I like to use a sonic stimulus... I tend to be drawn towards music or sound that is complex in rhythm so that I cannot grab on to anything but impact (obviously hard metal music in a foreign language like Swedish is enjoyable) though I also like pink noise.

post-colloidal trance is nice too.

Green eggs in a bowl of glass as a sacrament is nice too.
