Mangos have a huge pit, I wouldn't call it a nut. This is like the chicken and the egg. Eggs were around far longer than chickens, so there is the answer.

Should be Nuts... because everyone goes nuts with this kind of questions..

But technically speaking, it should be the tree because only 'life' can produce another 'life'. It could have started like us and started reproducing by yielding nuts. Nut, for all practical purposes doesn't have life. So, there was no possibility that nut was the one that got originated.
