My 10 week old kitten makes these funny little fast clicking noises from her mouth when you look at her and say hello does anyone know what this means?! and when shes goes to the toilet in her litter tray she meows before or after she has finished why is this? Also sometimes before she goes to the toilet she will lay in the litter tray and then go. Anyone know why? Many thanks.

Hi Karla...when cats make the noise you heard it generally means they are so excited about something they are seeing.

Here's a video of a cat making this similar noise:

Some cats are vocal prior or after using the litter box too.

The clicking noises or just another way to talk - my girlfriend's kitten Jasmine does that when she's chasing something, ie a fly, and she wants to play. It's pretty normal!

The meowing before or after she's finishing using her tray again might seem strange, but nothing to worry about! She's probably announcing the fact that she's "going". Litter trays for housebound kittens soon end up being their territory that they see as theirs - they'll very rarely be defensive, but it's kind of like singing "honey I'm home!" after walking through the front door!

I wouldn't let her lie in the tray. Kittens sometimes do this as a natural instinct - in the wild they would bury their toilet in earth (or whatever's around) and usually spray it with a scent to "claim" it. Your kitten might not be scenting, but it's the same motion and harmless. You should discourage her from doing it though, because she'll trail kitty litter all over the house from her legs and tummy!

Hope this helps!

When your kitten makes those clicking noises, she is just chattering at you. My cat 'chatters' at the birds when she sees them through the window. It means she wants to chase and eat them, but I don't think your kitten wants to eat you! I think it just means that she finds your company very fascinating.

Cats sometimes like to 'annouce' when they need to use their tray, but this is quite unusual. You should check that there is nothing that is making her uncomfortable. For example some cats don't like to use a tray twice, so she might be asking for clean litter. Very young kittens have their bottoms washed by their mums, and although your kitten is growing up now, she may be remembering this and calling for her mum.

As to lying in the litter tray - well, I think your kitten is still learning about her world and she might just be enjoying the texture of the litter. When we adopted our kitten, who was born 'wild', it took her a little while to figure out which box was her toilet and which was her bed. We had a couple of accidents before she worked it out.

Isn't it brilliant having a kitten to watch growing up? They are just so interesting. Have fun!

Cats and kittens have their own logic and they're not all the same. I had a male cat who would reply back with different meowing tones whenever we speak to him. He would reacted by noises especially if he hears someone sneezes.
He would smell his litter if anybody uses the bathroom where his litter is as if to make sure we did not use his litter. He would use his litter as soon as we clean it and if it's new, he would pick the bigger stones and throw it out of the litter box with his paw before he uses it. He was an amazing cat.

My cat is 16 this year and she always announces before she goes and afterwards.

She likes her litter tray tidied up as soon as possible and she does not like to use it twice unless she cannot wait for me to clean it.

I always praise her before and afterwards.

If she's used it and I've not been there, she will come to me later and meow for my attention. Then she will wait for about three seconds watching me begin the tidy up before she bolts off to bed.

She just likes to know it's being sorted out.

Even though she is much older than your kitten, she will chirp and coo as well as purr and mew. There's even a cute little trilling noise she makes.

Just keep giving her plenty of attention and love and you will both be very happy.

We have a 19wk kitten who "talks" all the time; she clicked at me when she was smaller because she didn't have ant other means of communication with me other than mewing. Now she uses many different noises. She has different sounds and mews for everything; just like a baby child would. She's hungry, wants to play, etc.. Her laying in the box before she goes means she is claiming it as hers. Have fun with your new kitten!

Just cat personality stuff. I've had cats that do some of that stuff too. The laying in the litter box I generally discourage, but I like the clicky noises.

She is saying hello back to you...

Kittens meow before or after potty, announcing to their moms they are going, and are finished, right now you are her mom, enjoy it soon she will be your master...Don't think a kitten knows why it is laying in the kitty box.. Maybe cause it is all hers? don't worry she will stop...

Enjoy

The clicking sounds mean that she she hates you. Only joking I think it's because she trying to tell you something. She is saying 'Look will you listen to me you you Human you, everytime I go to the tiolet it pains my **** like you won't believe. I think I'm constipated so how about you take me to the vet....you punk'.
