Renogram Renal Scan

A renogram or renal scan is a special test that uses a radioactive substance (or tracer) to examine your kidneys and their function.

A renogram is performed to evaluate the blood flow through the kidneys and to measure the amount of time it takes for the tracer to move through the kidney, collect in the urine and drain into the bladder.

Before the examination, you should tell your physician if you are pregnant or nursing. You will need to drink at least two 8-ounce glasses of water within one hour of the test. No dietary or medication restrictions are required.

During the test, your first step is to have a radioactive substance (or tracer) injected into a vein in your arm. You will not feel any effects from the injection. The radioactive substance travels through the blood to your kidneys. The radiation you are exposed to with the injected radioactive substance is about the same as a regular x-ray. Your body usually eliminates the tracer within 24 hours. You will be positioned on a table and images will be taken with a camera for about 30-45 minutes. You will be asked to lie still during that time. Occasionally, a medication called Lasix is also injected to stimulate the urine flow through the kidneys to the bladder. Length of the entire process is approximately one hour.

After the test, your renogram pictures will be examined by a radiologist. Your physician will receive a report of the findings and discuss the result with you.

Lasix Renogram

Unfortunately this is going to be a side effect. Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) if right-sided leads to pulmonary edema and basically "drowning" and left-sided leads to things like a congested liver/liver failure and ascites (fluid in the abdomen). The best diuretic available is lasix and this is a very acceptable treatment. Of course you shouldn't limit water intake because you are forcing water out at great rates and your dog might otherwise become dehydrated. You might have luck with a less potent diuretic but this all depends on the severity of the condition. Your veterinarian can help give you some advice or other treatment options.

This would be a test to view your kidney (renal) function. Lasix is a diuretic drug, which helps the body to get rid of excess fluids through the kidneys.
