You can still use a softphone like Skype or any of the phone in services, however headphones would be highly recommended. Similar to cell phones, VoIP softphones incorporate a bit of a delay and if you use just computer speakers, the calling party could hear themselves talking like an echo, or even worse it could create feedback. This is very annoying to say the least and should be avoided. You can minimize this effect by keeping your microphone as far as possible from the speakers and keep your speakers volume as low as possible. You can also turn your microphone gain down forcing you to talk a bit louder into the mic, but doing all of these things will help reduce or eliminate feedback and echoing.

If you are having difficulty hearing your received calls, you should check your audio settings. Most softphones will let you configure which audio device you use. Adjust and use an echo test server to double check your settings before using it to call people or receive calls. Make sure in your sound properties you don't have anything muted and the correct input devices selected such as the microphone in (correct) instead of the line in (incorrect).
