Because we're trying to fix the situation through intelligent use of force, not create a bunch of international incidents... The gang bangers in jail would be more interested in looting and stealing than liberation and would therefore be counterproductive to the war effort. It also takes quite a bit of intelligence to figure out who the insurgents actually are (that is when they're not shooting at you) and we don't need a bunch of idiots over there killing the wrong people.

They already are sending criminals.
The Armed Forces has relaxed their enlistment requirements, and felony convictions are no longer automatically disqualifying for service.
The problem with using the violent criminals would be controlling who they were shooting at.
Most of those sent to the war do not die, they are injured.
What status would they have if they were injured?
Full VA benefits like those that volunteered?
Or just just stop the bleeding and send them home?
Getting shot in the war would be a much better deal than getting shot in a gang war. Social Security, VA compensation, Free lifetime health care, educational benefits, etc.
If you believe that an undisciplined group of uneducated thugs could do the job of of military, you are seriously underestimating our troops.
If you are interested in preventing unnecessary deaths and injuries, you should be calling for the immediate and complete withdrawal of all troops from Iraq.
End the illegal occupation of Iraq
BRING ALL OF OUR TROOPS HOME NOW!!!

So you want to train confirmed gang members how to kill and survive under fire? Then hope when they return into society they will not revert back to illegal activity and use the new skills to commit more violent crimes?
I believe a year ago there was an artical in the media regarding gang members intentionally inlisting to get combat training so they could use those skills to inflict more damage on thier rivals. Although I understand your reasoning behind your theory, it would be a very unwise move. There are other ways to keep our loved ones safe without endangering our security back home.
Deplomacy, technology, and such

That is such a great thought. Why don't we do that? I think it would be a great thing to do with all of those low and possibly mid level convicts in our overcrowded prisons. Going to war is not such a horrible thing and doing so would quite possibly give a lot of those people a better wider view on life while getting people back home who deserve to be here when their deployments have been so unfairly overextended. Problem is training all these people. Do you think most would make it through Basic? Anyway, This is a great topic for further discussion.

Actually this is an old practice. Many young men were given a choice in the days past. Prison or war. It happened and most of the scumbags we sent to war instead of prison returned as productive citizens. Maybe its time to reinstate that practice.

Most prisoners wouldn't have the discipline to do what they were commanded to do in the field. We would have a better chance of using Pit Bulls. They would at least wouldn't require a paycheck, and they just love fresh meat.

Most guys in gangs never finish school.

That is a very good idea. It would solve so many problems: prison overpopulation, no need for a draft, the prisoners could be doing something meaningful with their lives. Unfortunately we can't do that. You see, the prison inmates have rights too, and they feel that would be cruel and inhuman treatment. (I read that in a newspaper article not long ago)
